About Montessori Farm School

Montessori Farm School is an authentic, nature-based Montessori program on a beautiful rural farm in Upcountry Maui, where we give children the gift of a gleefully muddy childhood.

Here, children dig, plant, build, observe, question, and grow—fully immersed in the real world as real little gardeners. 

Led by a Montessori Accreditation Council for Teacher Education (MACTE) and American Montessori Society (AMS) certified Montessori guide and director, our program brings the philosophy of Dr. Maria Montessori to life—that children are naturally capable learners who thrive when given freedom, purpose, and a prepared environment for hands-on discovery.

We serve children ages 3 to 6 in a small, mixed-age environment designed for independence, collaboration, and joyful exploration. Older children are occasionally welcomed as mentors, stepping into leadership and community roles.

In our farm environment, learning unfolds through:

• Gardening, planting, and growing food
• Soil science and ecological discovery
• Language through conversation, storytelling, and shared work
• Music, movement, and creative expression
• Hands-on problem solving in a living classroom
• S.T.E.A.M². Science, Technology, Engineering, Art - including Language Arts -- Math & Music, learning through real-world projects.

Our program is guided by authentic Montessori principles and nature-based learning, including peace education and child-led experience.

• Montessori Principles
  We follow Dr. Maria Montessori’s approach, which supports independence, hands-on learning, and the belief that children learn best through purposeful work in a prepared environment.
• Nature-Based Learning
  The farm is our classroom. Children learn through direct experience with the land—growing food, caring for soil, observing ecosystems, and understanding natural cycles.
• Peace Education
  We emphasize emotional development, conflict resolution, empathy, and respect for self, others, and the environment. Children learn how to work together and care for their community.
• Child-Led Experience
  Children are active participants in their learning, free to follow their interests, choose meaningful work, and progress at their own pace within a thoughtfully prepared environment. The Montessori guide observes each child closely, introducing materials and experiences when readiness and interest emerge, allowing learning to deepen naturally. Our mixed-age classroom also fosters leadership, responsibility, and mentorship as older children naturally support and inspire younger peers.

We are currently in the early stage of a larger vision. 

In time, we will build a dedicated Montessori classroom on the lower part of the property and expand into a full-time preschool—still rooted in the land, the seasons, and the natural rhythms of childhood.

At Montessori Farm School, childhood is lived outside, in the soil, in the sun, and in meaningful work.

Like a butterfly emerging from a chrysalis, whose wings must dry before flight, we prepare the environment and step back so the unrushed, wonderful childhood can unfold and take flight with self-esteem, purpose, and delight.
